Therapeutic Playdough Using Essential Oils is one of our favorite ways to play. Your kids can reap the aromatic benefits of the oils just by playing with the playdough!
I added a different oil to each color for a different benefit. We can just pull out the tub and play!
Frankincense for focus.
Peppermint for energy.
Lemon for clarity.
Citrus Fresh for creativity.
Lavender for comfort.
Therapeutic Playdough Using Essential Oils
What you need to make Therapeutic Playdough Using Essential Oils:
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
2 Tbsp cream of tartar
1 Tbsp vegetable oil
1 cup water
Food coloring
Essential oils
Mix together the flour, salt, cream of tartar, oil, and water in a medium saucepan. Stir in the food coloring and cook on medium-low heat until the dough starts to harden and come together.
Set on wax paper and allow to cool for a bit.
To add the oils, roll the playdough into a ball and make a well in the center. Add 10 drops of essential oils and knead it into the playdough to spread it out within in.
Store in an airtight container until ready to play.
Is your child a little too hyper? Pull out the lavender playdough. Want to help them focus? Frankincense playdough can help.
You can even switch out the essential oils depending on your favorite scents or other benefits.

Can you add the oils at a later time in the process? I’ve always been told the therapeutic properties are lost/greatly diminished when they are heated.
Arena
You can wait until the playdough is cooled and then make the well to drop in the oils, Charlotte.

Can you substitute rice flour for the wheat flour and have the same effect?

How big of containers are needed to store? I am looking at 2 oz containers but wasn’t positive.
Arena Blake
If you do individual batches for each color, you will need much larger containers to store. Mine were 8 oz.
Michelle Pritt
How many drops of essential oils did you add for each color?
Linda P
10 drops

Could the coloring also be added after the dough cools? Would love to do this with a group of children, but wondered if I could do the cooking part ahead and let them add their own color and oils after.
