A few weeks ago, we went to visit The Nerd’s family on the Texas Gulf Coast. Andrew loves to swim, so I was excited to take him out for a day at the beach. Unlike the first time we took him, he LOVED the water.
He was absolutely fearless, crashing through the waves and splashing around on the shore. It was so fun to watch him and realize how much he has changed over the last year. He is so enthusiastic for life and sometimes it seems as if nothing can stop him.
We’ve been taking baby swim lessons, which I think has greatly helped Andrew’s confidence in the water. We usually end class with “Dolfin Rides,” where I put Andrew on my back and he’s supposed to hang onto my neck as we glide around the pool. The first time, though, he refused to hang on. Our instructor told me to just let him go, so he’d fall into the water and understand that there were consequences for his actions.
I will never forget the look on his face as he slipped under the surface of the water. As I pulled him back out, he sputtered a few times and then, he laughed. He laughed.
This little boy, whose thirst for life astounds me, took the consequence and turned it on its head.
Sometimes, when the waves come crashing in, all you can do is laugh.
Or you could just go fishing.
