Review: The Iron King

June 1, 2010 by Arena Blake 2 Comments

The Iron King is the debut novel of Julie Kagawa.
It’s the first book I’ve read for the 2010 Debut Author Challenge from The Story Siren.
The story is told by Meghan Chase, your average teenager who seems invisible to most people she encounters. She chalks it up her own insignificance until her little brother is kidnapped by faeries and she is thrust into a political war between the different faerie courts.

There really is only one way to describe the writing in this book: honest.

Meghan’s descriptions, accounts and reactions are all honest. And it is very refreshing.

For instance, the back cover reads, “My name is Meghan Chase. In less than twenty-four hours I’ll be sixteen. Countless stories, songs and poems have been written about this wonderful age, when a girl finds true love and the stars shine for her and the handsome prince carries her off into the sunset.

I don’t think it will be that way for me.”

I really enjoyed the darker aspects of this novel. At times, it seemed a cross between Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan.

Julie Kawaga weaves a story that is compelling and dark, with bits of brightness thrown in the mix. It’s a great story and I can’t wait to find out what happens next.

The Iron King is available from Amazon here.

I know! Ash or Puck indeed. I'm excited to learn more about Puck… I hope we see more of him in The Iron Daughter!
