Review: I Am Number Four

August 12, 2010 by Arena Blake 2 Comments

When I first heard about this book, I knew I would like it.I mean, aliens hiding among us? A plot to assassinate said aliens? A charm that involves killing the aliens in a specific order?

Count me in!

“Nine of us came here. We look like you. We talk like you. We live among you. But we are not you. We can do things you dream of doing. We have powers you dream of having. We are stronger and faster than anything you have ever seen. We are the superheroes you worship in movies and comic books—but we are real. Our plan was to grow, and train, and become strong, and become one, and fight them. But they found us and started hunting us first. Now all of us are running. Spending our lives in shadows, in places where no one would look, blending in. we have lived among you without you knowing.

But they know.

They caught Number One in Malaysia.
Number Two in England.
And Number Three in Kenya.
They killed them all.

I am Number Four.

I am next.”

–Description from Good Reads

This story was very cool. I could really empathize with John, or Four, or whatever his name is. I’m still not sure about that.I like that it’s written from a male point of view. The main character’s thoughts seemed very in line with what I would imagine teenage boys think about. He seemed so human, I often found myself forgetting that he was an alien.

The romance added another layer to the story that I truly enjoyed. It reminded me of my high school relationships and the innocence of them. You always think that your high school sweetheart is your one true love. Luckily for me, I was totally wrong about that.

It was nice to see that Four had to deal with “normal” teenage issues — how to woo the girl he liked, a bully at school, etc — and also a few, more complicated alien issues — will his hands suddenly glow during English class?

The whole book, I knew that the Mogadorians were looking for him the whole book, but they kinda snuck up on me at the end. I was concerned with the real issues — like Four’s romance with Sara — and forgot about that whole death and destruction part, hehe.

This is an entertaining read, but it’s not really very complicated. The plot is on the surface — and it doesn’t go any deeper.

So, if you’re looking for a change from the traditional YA reads (normal teen girl falls in love with a monster), this one definitely fits that bill.I enjoyed it and I’m excited to see the movie.

I Am Number Four by Pittacus Lore is available from Amazon.

I started this book and haven't had a chance to finish it yet. Glad to hear there is romance!

I actually heard about the movie before the book. I'm really curious about this one.
