Review: Firelight by Sophie Jordan

September 7, 2010 by Arena Blake 4 Comments

If you do nothing else today, do yourself a favor: Go to the nearest bookstore and pick up a copy of Firelight by Sophie Jordan.Seriously, do it.

I *loved* this book and it hits shelves today.

“With her rare ability to breathe fire, Jacinda is special even among the draki—the descendants of dragons who can shift between human and dragon forms. But when Jacinda’s rebelliousness leads her family to flee into the human world, she struggles to adapt, even as her draki spirit fades. The one thing that revives it is Will, whose family hunts her kind. Jacinda can’t resist getting closer to him, even though she knows she’s risking not only her life but the draki’s most closely guarded secret.”

–Description from GoodReads

I started to read this book after I got home from work one evening last week. It was like 5 p.m. or so.I seriously *could not* put it down. I devoured it. I stayed up until 2 a.m. just so I could know what happened.

And even when I was finished, I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

From the first page, I was sucked in.

There’s action — A ton of it! Right from the beginning. And it doesn’t slack off. There’s a sense of urgency throughout the book that really moved the story forward.

There’s romance — The attraction between Will and Jacinda is so *real.* Right from the beginning, you want them to be able to be together. And there’s an actual reason behind it. I don’t want to spoil anything, but I really appreciated how the chemistry between them was not fabricated and that there was a rhyme and a reason to it all.

There’s rebellion — Jacinda’s pride treasures her as the first draki fire-breather in centuries. But they don’t treasure *her.* She fights the destiny the pride has chosen for her and tries to find a way to be herself.

There’s jealousy — I really liked her twin sister, Tamra. The inclusion of a character who was not draki really added depth to the story. I could relate to Tamra just wanting to be *normal*, but to Jacinda who just wanted to be herself.

The character I couldn’t really connect with was Jacinda’s mother. How could she put her daughter through what she does? Ugh. It was maddening! But I think that was the point and I really liked how her character was portrayed.

There are all of the components you see in paranormal YA stories nowadays. BUT – the elements are there for a *reason* and add to the plot of the story. It wasn’t just like — BAM! Jacinda loves Will because he’s *hot* and *special* and *out of reach.* There’s a reason she’s drawn to him.

I really, really, really loved this story.

Firelight by Sophie Jordan is available from Amazon.

I borrowed this book from a friend and I'm halfway through it, and so far it is AMAZING

I mean I've never read a story with dragons before but right now I'm obsessed with them and with this book!

Fantastic review! As you said, there's "rhyme and reason" – love it! I'm so tired of stories of magical-rainbows-and-butterflies-happy-happy-love-at-first-sight. Ugh. Yes, it's fantasy. But the aspects that mirror real life should be realistic. Yes? Yes.
