Paranormalcy by Kiersten White

November 5, 2010 by Arena Blake 12 Comments

A month ago, I got to meet Kiersten White. She is so funny and bubbly and cute! It was a great night.

Since then, I’ve been *dying* to read her debut novel, Paranormalcy. I finally had the chance to this week, and let me tell you — it was awesome!

By the way, I’m giving away the extra signed copy of her book I scored at the event. Stay tuned ’til the end of the post!

“Weird as it is working for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, Evie’s always thought of herself as normal. Sure, her best friend is a mermaid, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she’s falling for a shape-shifter, and she’s the only person who can see through paranormals’ glamours, but still. Normal.Only now paranormals are dying, and Evie’s dreams are filled with haunting voices and mysterious prophecies. She soon realizes that there may be a link between her abilities and the sudden rash of deaths. Not only that, but she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.

So much for normal.”

–Description from GoodReads
Evie is one of the funniest characters I’ve read about in a long, long time. And White paints such a clear picture of her, from her zebra print dress to her pink rhinestone weapon, Tasey.  I can totally see her vegging out on her purple couch eating popcorn and watching cheesy teenage dramas.

But then, I can see her in a cemetery wearing a “vamping” outfit as she neutralizes a rogue vampire.

Evie is like a contradiction, but a realistic and *fun* contradiction.

And the spark between her and Lend is bleeping awesome. Literally.

White created an amazing paranormal world, with gremlins and hags and non-sparkly vampires. And, of course, the bureaucrats who police that world.

I totally didn’t see the end coming, and I really liked how there was a definite plot ending in this book.

There are two more books in the series, but we weren’t left with a cliffhanger ending.

I would highly recommend this book to those with a love of the paranormal and teenage snark. It’s bleeping awesome!

Paranormalcy by Kiersten White is available from Amazon.

Oh awesome! I almost was going to visit her, but she wasn't in my city and the date didn't quite pan out like I would've hoped. Hoping for next year!

I totally agree with you: I tend to dislike cliffhanger endings that don't have a definite plot ending, too.

This sounds so amazing! Yay for no cliffhangers! And Evie sounds like quite the character! (I mean that in the way you'd say it about a person…which kind of doesn't really work when she's actually a character, does it? lol) Great review! I run to my mailbox every morning hoping mine has arrived so that I can read this one – it sounds soooo good!
