Geek Love

February 14, 2010 by Arena Blake 43 Comments

A while back, I stumbled upon this book and it made my heart flutter.
“The Official Handbook” to understanding geeks? Yes, please!
As I’m sure you can tell from this blog, dating (and marrying!) a socially-awkward individual can be trying at times. Geeks (and Nerds) have a different mind set than most people.
Carrie Tucker, the author, is a self-professed nerd whose boyfriend works for a video game company.
Now, this book is not entirely serious. It explores the stereotypical geek. And it can seem condescending at times. But in good fun, this book rocks.
It opens with a quiz to determine “What Type of Geek is Your Guy?”
James is a hybrid: Video Game Geek meets Film and Television Geek meets Science Fiction and Fantasy Geek. Yikes.
Then, the book details six different types of geeks, how to date that type, common relationship problems you may encounter and a brief glossary and history to help you better understand the things your geek loves.
  • Video Game Geeks – “In many relationships, the game controller is known as the mistress.”
  • Comic Book and Graphic Novel Geeks – “Ah, the comic book store. That dark, cavernous place your geek disappears into every weekend.”
  • Manga and Anime Geeks – “An Acquired Taste. Like Sushi.”
  • Film and Television Geeks – “We’re talking about the film and television geek who is obsessed with nerdy shows!”
  • Sports Geeks – “Geeks loving sports may seem like quite the shocker…but they do love them.”
  • Science Fiction and Fantasy Geeks – “Science fiction and fantasy geeks are truly birds of different feathers — or Klingons of different planets…”
All in all, it’s a fun read. And appropriate for Valentine’s Day … how better to bond your love with your Nerd than join him for a LOTR marathon or quest in Star Trek: Online.
And just for you *awesome* readers with Nerds of your own, I’m hosting my very first giveaway!

The winner will receive a copy of Carrie Tucker’s “I (love) Geeks” book and a $25 gift card to Amazon.com.

To enter, please leave a comment below answering the following question:
“What do you love most about your geek?”

Or, if you aren’t lucky enough to have a geek of your own, just tell me what you love most about your significant other. 🙂

For extra entries, become a follower of my blog, tweet about this giveaway, or post it on Facebook! And leave me a comment telling me that you’ve done so.

If you’re already a follower, don’t fret! Just leave a comment saying that you’re already a follower. 🙂

The winner will be chosen by Random.org’s number generator. Contest closes at noon Central on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010.

Good luck!Edit: Thank you to all who entered! This contest is now closed. Click here to see the results!

I like having a geek around because he's able to fix a lot of the little household problems without having to pay someone to come in and do it. Of course, we won't talk about the little household problems he causes…

I love my geek! The thing I love most about him (besides his great personality)is that he is so tech savvy, and I am not. He can solve all my computer problems. He's also very handy in other areas, like plumbing and electrical…and he enjoys doing it!

Hi, so nice to meet you. I’m Yoli, a fellow “Texas Blogging Gal”. I made it my goal to visit each member’s Blog. I don’t want to just “drive-thru” to meet a quota, but instead to share the gift of friendship that God gives us all. I’m excited to read your inspirational stories and see your creative works. You are always welcomed for a visit at my blog.

Arena, you make an adorable couple!! I'm a single mom of 2 kids, and I was married to a Nerd. I'm just wondering, do you watch the TV show "BIG BANG". My kids and I love the show!!

    God Bless You!

What DON'T I love about my geek? I think the best thing is the way he makes me laugh. Even in the toughest times, he can always make me smile and laugh.

What I love most about my geek is that I have someone to geek out with. We're both into comics and sci-fi and movies and we have the best conversations. That and he's really good at fixing my computer. 🙂

    Great giveaway!

I have to say, the geeks and nerds are the most caring and faithful men I've met yet!
I have a friend (possibly future significant other…) who is a total sports geek. But it's great! Geeks have passion, and that's a lot more than you can say about some other guys.

I hate to say that the man I love is in no way a geek or nerd. Which means that mantle falls on my shoulders. So I would love to love a geek! But my guy takes our son to school, picks him up, and has supper ready when I get home from work, so guess I'll keep him!

Hi. I found you through Texas Blogging Gals and came by to say hello. You can find me at http://www.lonestarlifer.wordpress.com, so come by and say howdy sometime.

I love that my husband of 14 years thinks he isn't a geek…well he's more like a computer nerd..but would never admit it. He is a DSL tech – and a total video game freak. I LOVE THAT whenever I think I've broken the computer and am cussing up a storm….he just shakes his head, sighs and pushes like 2 buttons and viola – fixed!! well sometimes I hate that.

The dynamic gameplay of Among Us ensures that each round is unique. The mix of tasks, sabotage, and discussions keeps players engaged and on their toes. The game’s ability to adapt to different player strategies adds to its replayability.
