I recently won a contest called the Great YA Bake Sale.
One of the prizes was a recipe binder with hand-written recipes from 15 young adult authors! This was the perfect prize, as it combined two of my favorite things: reading and cooking!
When I started browsing through these recipes, one that immediately caught my eye was this recipe for Butterscotch Chocolate Chip Cookies.
There’s just something about butterscotch that reminds me of autumn and I thought this would be a great addition to the traditional chocolate chip cookie.
And it was! These cookies are really chewy and moist.
Butterscotch Chocolate Chip Cookies
Source: Megan Crewe, author of Give Up the Ghost
Ingredients:
2 1/4 c all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 c margarine or softened butter
3/4 c brown sugar
1/4 c granulated sugar
1 pkg instant butterscotch pudding mix
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 c semisweet chocolate chips
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Mix flour and baking soda. Set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, cream together butter, brown sugar and white sugar. Beat in the instant pudding mix. Then, mix in the eggs and vanilla.
Blend the flour mixture into the wet ingredients. Stir in the chocolate chips.
Drop cookies by the spoonfuls onto cookie sheets lined with parchment paper or a silpat.
Bake for 10-12 minutes, until edges are golden brown.
Let cool on cookie sheets for a few minutes until firm, then transfer to wire rack to cool completely.
Makes two dozen cookies.
Enjoy!
PS – I read a recent discussion on the cooking message board I read about blog pet peeves.
Apparently, a common one is the step-by-step recipe photos.
So, I thought I’d try a post without them.
I must say, it was a lot easier to cook without having to grab my camera every five minutes.
But I wonder if the post is lacking now that there’s just a few photos.
What do you think?
Step-by-step photos a no-no?
Or a must have?
Thanks for looking!

I think if someone needs step by step pictures, they probably shouldn't be cooking in a real kitchen with big equipment. 🙂 I can't wait to try this recipe!

I think process photos are good but they don't necessarily have to be step-by-step. If you're making something and, say, the batter looks really nice, why not show everyone?

These look SO GOOD! Thank you for sharing the recipe! Hmmm…I think the most important photo is the finished product…but maybe that's just because I have no idea whether I'm doing it right without having a photo to compare to lol

love seeing step by step photos but I know it's tedious to do. love the cookies but I'm wondering what does the pudding mix bring!

Thanks everyone!
sweet_tooth, the pudding adds the butterscotch flavor and a chewy texture to the cookie. 🙂

The pictures look wonderful and the cookies look delicious! Hehe! I personally like looking at the photos but I don't think they are particularly necessary. But like Casey said, the most important photo is the finished product. Thanks for sharing the recipe with us, Arena! =)

Oooo! Those cookies look yummy!! And I love the pics you've put on. It's just the perfect amount!!! Step-by-steps aren't necessary unless there's an instruction that might seem hard to follow without a visual (if you get what I mean). Thanks for this recipe– I will try it sometime! 🙂

oh gosh those look awesome.
Thanks for sharing the recipe! I'm trying them this weekend if i can find the pudding mix.

I really like looking at the step-by-step pictures… but I guess they aren't necessary. I enjoy them though. 😀 These cookies look amazing. I will have to try them!

I will definitely say that I am NOT a fan of the step-by-step photos. I usually just skip over them to the recipe. But, I will say that I like the "before" photos of the ingredients. I agree with one of the other commenters that said if the batter looks really cool, then post a pic of it. Or if there's a certain way the dough should look before continuing, or the butter should be cut in until it looks like *this*…those pics are always helpful.
In all honesty, you have a great blog and I'd come back whether you had one pic or 15.

They look delicious!
