These Baby Groot Cupcakes were a favorite treat during our Guardians of the Galaxy Party. I was surprised at how easy they were to make — the body is just made from Tootsie Rolls!
Baby Groot Cupcakes
What You Need to Make Baby Groot Cupcakes:
- Baked cupcakes, cooled and ready to be decorated
- White icing
- Oreo cookies
- Snack Sized Tootsie Rolls (I used the ones from this bag of candy)
- Midgee Tootsie Rolls
- Wax Paper
- Black Sixlets
- Toothpicks
Spread the white icing onto the top of each cupcake. Crumble the Oreo cookies — the pieces will look like dirt and rocks. Put it on a plate and dip the tops of the iced cupcakes into the pieces to make them stick to each cupcake.
Now, it’s time to make the Baby Groot figures! You’ll use the thicker snack sized Tootsie Rolls for the body of Baby Groot. Place an unwrapped Tootsie Roll onto a microwave safe plate and microwave on high for 5 seconds to soften it.
Cut some slits into the top to make the branches on his head, and stretch and mold the Tootsie Roll to form Baby Groot’s body — I twisted the bottom part and flattened the face. Cut a slit for his mouth and press on two Black Sixlets for his eyes.
To make his arms, microwave an unwrapped midgee Tootsie Roll for 5 seconds. Cut it in half, then add a slit to the end of each half (for his fingers). Stretch out the Tootsie Roll pieces and twist them around to make his hands. Attach the the body and place on wax paper to cool.
When you’re ready to assemble the cupcakes, insert a toothpick into the bottom of each Baby Groot and place it into the top of each cupcake.
We also used a second toothpick to stabilize the top to prevent Groot from leaning over backward due to the weight of his eyes.
Aren’t they fun?

These are still the cutest cupcakes I’ve seen! (You should do a video how-to of the Groot body/arms for sillies like me!)

That’s a great idea, Sara!
