Chills and Thrills Teen Book Tour, Allen, Texas

Chills and Thrills-005.jpg

This weekend, we had the chance to attend the Chills and Thrills Teen Book Tour at a Real Bookstore in Allen, Texas.

Chills and Thrills-008.jpg

As you well know, I am *addicted* to book events, and couldn’t pass this one up!

Chills and Thrills-002.jpg

This is Tera Lynn Childs, author of Forgive my Fins and Sweet Venom.

Tera told us all about Sweet Venom, to be released this fall, about a set of monster-hunting triplets. Doesn’t that sound awesome?

Chills and Thrills-003.jpg

Next was Tracy Deebs, author of Tempest Rising and Zero Day.

Zero Day sounds fantastic — a dystopian retelling of Pandora’s Box, where the main character opens an e-mail attachment and brings about technological Armageddon. It is set to release in 2012.

Chills and Thrills-004.jpg

And lastly, Jennifer Archer, author of Through Her Eyes. This ghost story sounds fantastic and I can’t wait to dig into it!

Chills and Thrills-006.jpg

Here’s me and Tera. She was super-fun and I am now dying to read Sweet Venom.

Chills and Thrills-007.jpg

And here’s me, Tracy and Jennifer. They were also lots of fun. It was neat to meet authors from our home state.

Of course, I couldn’t leave without getting signed copies to give away to you guys!

There will be three winners.

Winner #1 will receive a *signed* hardcover copy of Forgive My Fins by Tera Lynn Childs. Winner #2 will receive a *signed* hardcover copy of Tempest Rising by Tracy Deebs. Winner #3 will receive a *signed* hardcover copy of Through Her Eyes by Jennifer Archer.

Princess for a Day at the Renaissance Faire

Renaissance-013.jpg

This weekend, we headed to the Scarborough Renaissance Festival in Waxahachie, Texas.

Lately, River has been obsessed with princesses. She loves Beauty and the Beast and all you have to do to make her happy is tell her she looks like a princess.

So, we knew this would be the perfect treat for her!

Her mom did an awesome job of dressing her up in a princess costume. She braided her hair and River looked so beautiful.

River was so excited to go to the “fessival” to see the King and Queen. She wanted to dance with the King, she told us. It was so cute.

Our first stop once we arrived was by the face painting booth.

Renaissance-002.jpg

River was so excited to have her face painted. She sat so still and did a great job of letting the artist work her magic.

Renaissance-005.jpg

My favorite thing about it, though? The Nerd has this irrational fear of face paint. It totally weirds him out. And I may or may not enjoy seeing him squirm. I mean, come on! Face paint? Not clowns or bunnies? Face paint?

Hehehehe.

Renaissance-009.jpg

Once she was finished, River ran over to the mirror to get a better look at herself. She was so excited!

Renaissance-012.jpg

Isn’t she a doll?

After she was all prettied up, we headed browsed around the festival some more. River loved seeing everyone in their costumes.

We soon found a shop with crowns. Of course, no princess is complete without a crown.

She picked out this beautiful yellow crocheted crown with butterflies on it. So adorable!

Then, we headed off in search of a show or some food.

Along the way, we happened upon a shop with fairie wings. Once River saw them, she immediately headed that way. And how could we resist?

Renaissance-014.jpg

She picked out some blue ones. You know, to match her pink dress and yellow crown. So cute!

With her wings and crown, she was a full-fledged princess. She found another mirror and was dancing and twirling and admiring her outfit.

Renaissance-015.jpg

This was my favorite shot of the day. She has just the perfect princess pose!

Renaissance-016.jpg

And here she is dancing and having fun! Love it!

Renaissance-017.jpg

Next, we got to ride a camel! Err…River and Nanna got to ride a camel.

Renaissance-018.jpg

Don’t they look like they’re having fun?

It was such an awesome day, and I think River had a blast!

My favorite part of the day? The food!! Sausage on a stick and kettle corn. Y.U.M.

Have you ever been to a Renaissance Festival? What’s your favorite part?

More Chevy Fan Day Photos (with Jeff Gordon!)

Chevy Fan Day-019.jpg

You may have seen my post last week with the video of my trip around the race track with Jeff Gordon. It was so much fun!

I’ve *finally* had a chance to go through all of my photos from that awesome day and edit them, so I wanted to share them with you!

I’ve been doing a lot of work with Chevy lately — they are such an amazing company. And I don’t just say that because I own (and love!) one of their cars.

In fact, they have a whole social community for women centered around their cars. We’ve had such fun chats on Twitter, and they share great tips on how to conserve gas and maintain your vehicle.

Seriously, if you’re not already, you *should* follow Chevy DFW on Twitter and “like” them on Facebook.

Now on to the photos!

Chevy Fan Day-005.jpg

We first stopped by the Ride and Drive event for Chevy Fans. You had the chance to test drive one of their vehicles! Of course, The Nerd wanted to test drive the 2011 Chevy Camaro Convertible.

Chevy Fan Day-006.jpg

I must say, it had a really nice view. Heh!

Chevy Fan Day-007.jpg

I think Shannon from Milk and Cuddles needs a new ride. She looks *good* in that Camaro!

Then, we all had a chance to take a trip around the track with a Team Chevy driver. I had a blast with my driver, Shane from Oklahoma City. We got up to 100 mph… but the best was yet to come!

Chevy Fan Day-016.jpg

We headed back to the clubhouse to eat lunch. Soon, we were joined by Jeff Gordon, who did a brief Q&A and autograph session.

When we arrived, we were each given a raffle ticket. The coordinators drew 10 random tickets to win a hot lap with Jeff Gordon.

The Nerd won! He’s so lucky. They let me come along for the ride, too.

Chevy Fan Day-023.jpg

It was so neat to see Jeff pull up in a Chevy Camaro. I think it was a bit harder to drive with the top down, though! Not as aerodynamic as he’s used to, haha!

Chevy Fan Day-024.jpg

Jeff looked really good coming out of that Camaro! He came over to talk to us, telling us that they asked him to keep it under 90 mph. Yeah, right, he told us.

Chevy Fan Day-025.jpg

And he was true to his word! The Nerd said he saw the speedometer pass 130 mph. Eeee!

It was such a great day, and I had a blast.

I think The Nerd did, too.

Who’s your favorite race car driver? Or do you even follow NASCAR?

Chevy Fan Day With Jeff Gordon at Texas Motor Speedway

Chevy Fan Day-001.jpg

Yesterday, the Nerd and I headed to Texas Motor Speedway for Chevy Fan Day, courtesy of Chevy DFW.

I had never been to a NASCAR event, and I’m still processing a lot of what we saw and experienced. I have TONS of photos to go through and edit (and share with you all!)

But the coolest things we got to do was go on a hot lap with Jeff Gordon. I took along my video camera so you could experience it, too.

It was so much fun! Jeff told us that they asked him to stay at or below 90 mph during the lap, but then he wouldn’t say how fast he was going. Naughty, naughty.

Luckily, The Nerd was sitting in the back seat with a clear view of the speedometer — he said it passed 130 mph.

Have you ever been to a NASCAR race? Who’s your favorite driver?

I promise more pics (and stories) soon!

Spring In Texas Means One Thing…

2011 Bluebonnets-016.jpg

BLUEBONNETS!!

2011 Bluebonnets-005.jpg

Ask any Texan mom (or, in my case, aunt) and they’ll tell you — Spring means days spent eyeing random fields and highway sides looking for the inky blue petals of our state flower.

2011 Bluebonnets-009.jpg

What is it about bluebonnets that makes us go crazy and dress up our children and try to make them sit still long enough to snap a few photos?

2011 Bluebonnets-010.jpg

It’s not like we haven’t taken these pictures every. single. year.

2011 Bluebonnets-004.jpg

It’s not like it’s *easy* for a toddler to sit still while there are so many pretty flower to touch.

2011 Bluebonnets-001.jpg

So many pretty flowers in which to frolic.

2011 Bluebonnets-003.jpg

So many pretty flowers in which to… check your e-mail? Yes, this is what Nerds do when you bring them along for “moral support.” He does this all. the. freaking. time.

2011 Bluebonnets-012.jpg

River had a great time running through the field of bluebonnets we found.

Such a great time, in fact, that she cried when it was time to go.

“But I wanna play in the pretty flowers,” she wailed, as Nanna carried her back to the car. “We can’t stay here all day,” Nanna replied. “But I don’t want to leave.”

2011 Bluebonnets-017.jpg

I guess we’ll just have to come back next year.

Do you like our field of bluebonnets? It’s the *perfect* spot if you live in North Dallas.

There are three huge field of bluebonnets right in front of the JCPenney headquarters in Plano. Here’s the address: 6501 Legacy Drive, Plano, Texas. If you turn right onto Corporate Drive from Legacy Drive, there are spots to park along the road. So awesome!

Do you take photos of your kids in the bluebonnets? Where are your favorite spots?

Claudia Gray Signing: Dallas, Texas

Claudia Gray-004.jpg

Last night, I headed to our local Barnes and Noble to see Claudia Gray, author of Afterlife, the fourth book in the Evernight series.

I haven’t had the chance to read the series yet, but I’ve heard great things about it. And you know my obsession with author signings. This one was so close, I couldn’t miss it!

Claudia Gray-006.jpg

Claudia was so wonderful — she took the time to chat with each of us in the line and she even asked me about the story behind my name.

That’s one I’ll have to share sometime. It’s a great one.

Claudia Gray-004.jpg

I really loved how personable and nice Claudia was. I’m so often star-struck by the authors I meet, but she made me feel so comfortable.

Claudia Gray-008.jpg

Isn’t she so great?

And…because I love you all so very much, I scored an extra *signed* copy of Afterlife to give away!

The winner will receive a *signed* hardcover copy of Afterlife by Claudia Gray!

Tuff Hedeman Championship Challenge: 2011

I have lived in Texas my whole life (except for a brief stint in Washington, DC for an internship). In that time, I’ve been to the State Fair, I’ve crossed the Rio Grande, I’ve seen the Come and Get It Canon and I’ve even been to Cowboys Stadium.

I think of myself as a true Texan, but until this weekend, I had never been to a rodeo. That’s right — no bullriding challenges for me.

So when the North Texas Chevy Dealers invited me to the 2011 Tuff Hedeman Championship bullriding challenge, I happily accepted!

April and Eric came up from Houston to go with us. It was a great chance to get to hang out for a while!

Tuff_Hedeman-002.jpg

Of course, we *had* to stop by the Chevy booth when we arrived at the Will Rogers Coliseum.

Tuff_Hedeman-003.jpg

It’s Truck Month at Chevy, so I made sure to stop by and check out the new Chevy Silverado. I just love this color of red.

Tuff_Hedeman-004.jpg

And, of course, we had to check out the Chevy Volt!

Tuff_Hedeman-005.jpg

Here’s the plug where you plug it in! I just think that’s *so* cool!

Tuff_Hedeman-008.jpg

When it was time for the rodeo to start, the Silverado was front and center (as it should be!).

Tuff_Hedeman-010.jpg

The show got started with a bang, and a tribute to CBR.

Tuff_Hedeman-011.jpg

And then Tuff Hedeman himself rode in on a motorcycle!

Tuff_Hedeman-013.jpg

Soon, the bull riding began.

Tuff_Hedeman-025.jpg

These guys have *guts*.

Tuff_Hedeman-029.jpg

Occasionally, a bull broke free once it had bucked off its rider. The errant bulls were quickly rounded up, though.

Tuff_Hedeman-030.jpg

This bull was named Marshmallow. A cute name for a mean bull.

Tuff_Hedeman-032.jpg

In true fashion, The Nerd wore his “bow chica bow wow” shirt to the event. You can be sure we stood out from the crowd.

Tuff_Hedeman-045.jpg

After the riding was over, Cody Canada and the Departed played for the crowd.

Tuff_Hedeman-063.jpg

I loved Cross Canadian Ragweed and was sad to learn of their split. But I really enjoyed the new music they played!

It was a really fun night and I’m so glad we had the chance to go.

Have you ever been to a rodeo? What’s your favorite part?

**Disclaimer** North Texas Chevy Dealers provided four tickets for us to attend this event. We really enjoyed ourselves!
