My First Major "Mommy Brain" Moment

For the most part, adjusting to life as a new mom has been ok. I’m still a little sleep-deprived and balancing work and home life has been a challenge. But that’s another post for another time.

But my memory! Oh, my memory! I don’t know what happened to it. It’s like it packed up its bags and left the minute Andrew was born. Sometimes I think he sucked every last brain cell out of my head like some kind of alien life form. If that’s the case, he better grow up to be one smart dude.

The only way I can describe “Mommy Brain” is that it feels like there’s a wall in my mind that I can’t get past. It’s crazy.

So last week, I had my first major “Mommy Brain” moment. My mom and I took Andrew to the grocery store to buy some more formula. We pulled into the parking lot, I turned off the car and took out the keys. I then went around to the back of my car to get Andrew out. I unhooked his car seat and set it in the buggy. But when I went to lock the car, I couldn’t find my keys.

They were gone! I dug around in the back seat. Nope. Went to the front seat. Not there. Dumped everything out of the diaper bag. Nada. I even went so far as to dig around inside Andrew’s car seat.

Then my mom looked for them. She couldn’t find them either. I started to panic. How could I have lost the keys in a matter of two minutes?

Thank goodness my mom was there. We searched and searched and searched, and 15 minutes later (not exaggerating here, folks) she found my keys! They were tucked down in a corner of the back seat. I have no idea how they got there. I’m just glad we found them!

Of course, Andrew was oblivious. He slept through the whole thing.

Must be all those extra brain cells.

What “Mommy Brain” moments have you had? I can’t be the only one out there!

Leprechaun Cookie Bark

Leprechaun Cookie Bark

St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner, and I’ve been DYING to get in the kitchen and do some baking. I found this really cute recipe on Pinterest, and knew I HAD to make it!

It is super-yummy… I could seriously eat a whole bowl of this by myself. I may have had a few too many pieces…

On a baking sheet lined with wax paper, evenly spread the pretzel sticks, M&Ms and Thin Mints. Reserve some M&Ms to sprinkle on top.

Melt the milk chocolate candy melts and spread the mixture evenly with a spatula. Sprinkle the shamrock sprinkles and reserved M&Ms on top.

Drizzle with melted white chocolate candy melts.

Allow to harden and break into pieces to serve.

Droid Xyboard 8.2 from Verizon Wireless: Perfect for a Lazy Weekend!

On Friday, this super-fun box arrived on my doorstep: A Droid XYBOARD 8.2 from Verizon Wireless!

I’ve already been testing the Verizon Wireless network and Android operating system on the Droid RAZR. But I was really excited to get to try the 4G LTE on a tablet.

I own a first-generation iPad, and was anxious to compare it to the XYBOARD. Surprisingly, the XYBOARD didn’t disappoint! I thought I wouldn’t like the size (it’s smaller than the iPad), but it is a refreshing change from the heft of the Apple device.

On Saturday, I took the XYBOARD into the kitchen to use it as a recipe viewer. It was easy to handle one-handed while pouring melted chocolate.

Yesterday, I spent the day lounging with Andrew. As he slept on me, it was AWESOME to be able to browse the Internet, check Twitter and Facebook and search Pinterest all on the XYBOARD. And the 4G LTE is FAST. Oh my goodness. It is AWESOME!

I’ll be sharing some more of my experiences with the XYBOARD, but I wanted to share an awesome opportunity with you today! You can win 2 Droid XYBOARD 8.2 by Motorola Tablets per day from now until March 11! Awesome, right?

Szechuan Beef Stir-Fry – Healthy Meals to Fuel the Family: Week One

Beef Szechuan-003

A few months ago, I participated in a campaign with the Texas Beef Council featuring a group of recipes designed for the winter holidays. Well, we are BACK with some more fun recipes to FUEL your FAMILY.

This week, we’re featuring Nutrient-Rich Sunday Suppers. And boy, do I have an awesome recipe for you! This meal is SO EASY… it would be perfect for a quick-and-easy week-night dinner. It seriously took me like 20 minutes to throw this together!

The focus this week is on nutrient-rich foods, which are a delicious way to maximize your nutrient intake while minimizing excess intake of fat and sugar calories. With tasty options, you can fill your nutrient gaps and get the nutrition power your family needs to feel better and be stronger!

Follow this cheat sheet next time you visit the grocery store to ensure that you’re choosing nutritious foods to fuel your family through an active day:

  • Whole grains for fiber, folate and energy. Your local supermarket is full of flavorful options like whole wheat bread, oatmeal, multi-grain pastas, brown rice and “light” microwave popcorn. Look for products marked “100 percent whole grains”.
  • Fruits and vegetables for vitamins A, C and potassium for healing and fighting illness. The most nutrient-rich produce is brightly colored: blueberries, strawberries, tomatoes, spinach and sweet potatoes.
  • Dairy for calcium, vitamin D and potassium for strong bones. Today’s dairy case has lots of lower-fat alternatives, like fat-free and reduced-fat milk, yogurt and cheese.
  • Lean beef for zinc, iron and protein to help keep you lean and strong. Lean beef is a satisfying source of many nutrients, including B-vitamins and selenium. A 3-ounce serving of one of the lean cuts (like top sirloin, brisket, and T-bone) has fewer than 200 calories and 10 grams of fat per serving.

Be sure to check out even more nutrient-rich information and tips on the Texas Beef Council’s website!

And now, for the yummy goodness!

2 beef shoulder center steaks (Ranch Steaks), cut 3/4 inch thick (about 8 oz each)
1 pkg (10 oz) fresh vegetable stir-fry blend
3 Tbsp water
1 clove garlic, minced
1/2 c prepared sesame-ginger stir-fry sauce
1/4 tsp crushed red pepper
2 c hot cooked rice or brown rice, prepared without butter or salt
1/4 c dry-roasted peanuts

Combine vegetables and water in large nonstick skillet; cover and cook over medium-high heat 4 minutes or until crisp-tender. Remove and drain vegetables. Set aside.

Meanwhile cut beef steaks into 1/4-inch thick strips.

Heat same skillet over medium-high heat until hot. Add 1/2 of beef and 1/2 of garlic; stir-fry 1 to 2 minutes or until outside surface of beef is no longer pink. Remove from skillet; keep warm. Repeat with remaining beef and garlic.

Return all beef and vegetables to skillet. Add stir-fry sauce and red pepper; cook and stir 1 to 2 minutes or until heated through. Spoon over rice. Sprinkle with peanuts and serve.

Droid RAZR from Verizon Wireless: Navigation ROCKS!

I have absolutely NO sense of direction. Seriously, I would never make it anywhere without my GPS. But the one I have in my car is four years old and SO outdated. And I’m not a big fan of Google Maps on my iPhone… it’s difficult to use while driving.

So when The Nerd and I decided to go visit his parents in Corpus Christi last weekend, we took the opportunity to try out the Navigation app on the Motorola Droid RAZR.

Oh my goodness, Google really outdid themselves on this app!

The app includes a step-by-step list of directions for your trip, including the distance and travel time.

Here’s a map overview of our trip. We had a long way to go!

Unlike Google Maps on the iPhone, these directions are rendered in 3D, which makes it easier to visualize as you click through each direction.

This is probably my favorite thing about the Navigation app. Just look at the traffic info! My car GPS doesn’t have this. And Google Maps on my iPhone isn’t nearly this sophisticated. LOVE it!

And how cool is this feature? Google Street View in 3D!

Needless to say, we made it safely to Corpus Christi. The Nerd’s parents were glad to get to spend some time with Andrew, and we were glad for the seamless directions, thanks to the Motorola Droid RAZR, courtesy of Verizon Wireless!

Do you use a GPS to find your way around?
