A Birthday Party With TAMPICO Beverages

Today is my birthday … and I really wanted to celebrate it the right way.

So when TAMPICO® Beverages contacted me earlier this month and asked me to throw a party in honor of their all-new 20 oz. single-serving beverages, I jumped at the chance.

I mean, how else would I want to celebrate my birthday?

Tampico Party-007.jpg

So, I gathered my family together and we threw one heck of a shin-dig.

Tampico Party-002.jpg

No party would be complete without snazzy TAMPICO® sunglasses and cupcakes.

Tampico Party-001.jpg

And fun squiggly straws for guests to use to enjoy their refreshing TAMPICO® beverages.

Tampico Party-003.jpg

Cupcakes! YUM!

Tampico Party-005.jpg

The line-up of flavors. We had Citrus Punch and Fruit Punch. I really loved the Fruit Punch flavor. So yummy!

Tampico Party-008.jpg

The Nerd especially enjoyed the Citrus Punch flavor.

Tampico Party-010.jpg

River and Pappy had a great time with their sunglasses.

Tampico Party-011.jpg

So did Andy and Baby Eli. Isn’t Eli a doll?

Tampico Party-013.jpg

Doesn’t he look like one of the Blues Brothers? I am cracking up just looking at it!

Tampico Party-014.jpg

River and her mommy even shared a bottle of TAMPICO®. River really loved it.

Tampico Party-017.jpg

Soon, it was time for me to blow out my candle! Yes, candle as in, a singular candle. If we put a candle on the cupcake for every year, that cupcake would melt!

Of course, the BEST part of the party was taking the photos from it and entering them in the TAMPICO® Unique Like You contest.

Here’s The Nerd all tricked out. Now he’s definitely a Blues Brother.

Visit TAMPICO® on Facebook to enter the contest yourself. You don’t even have to be drinking a TAMPICO® beverage in your photo!

All in all, it was a great birthday. Thanks, Tampico!

The Contest is now Closed.

Are you ready to win some more ARCs? Don’t you just LOVE July?

This week’s ARCs are AWESOME! I’ve read (and LOVED) the first. The second is one I’m DYING to dig into!

“It happens at the start of every November: the Scorpio Races. Riders attempt to keep hold of their water horses long enough to make it to the finish line. Some riders live. Others die.

At age nineteen, Sean Kendrick is the returning champion. He is a young man of few words, and if he has any fears, he keeps them buried deep, where no one else can see them.

Puck Connolly is different. She never meant to ride in the Scorpio Races. But fate hasn’t given her much of a chance. So she enters the competition — the first girl ever to do so. She is in no way prepared for what is going to happen.”

Release Date: Oct. 18, 2011

“Grace just moved to San Francisco and is excited to start over at a new school. The change is full of fresh possibilities, but it’s also a tiny bit scary. It gets scarier when a minotaur walks in the door. And even more shocking when a girl who looks just like her shows up to fight the monster.

Gretchen is tired of monsters pulling her out into the wee hours, especially on a school night, but what can she do? Sending the minotaur back to his bleak home is just another notch on her combat belt. She never expected to run into this girl who could be her double, though.

Greer has her life pretty well put together, thank you very much. But that all tilts sideways when two girls who look eerily like her appear on her doorstep and claim they’re triplets, supernatural descendants of some hideous creature from Greek myth, destined to spend their lives hunting monsters.

These three teenage descendants of Medusa, the once-beautiful gorgon maligned by myth, must reunite and embrace their fates in this unique paranormal world where monsters lurk in plain sight.”

What’s In A Name?

When I announced that we are expecting a little baby boy, a few of you dear readers asked if we had a name picked out.

I didn’t answer right away … you see, picking out a name has been one of the hardest parts of my pregnancy. The Nerd and I just don’t agree.

We argued and debated and I’d suggest a name and he’d hate it. And then I’d suggest another and he’d hate it.

I want the baby’s name to have some meaning to us. But I also want the name to be fairly traditional. I grew up with an unusual name, and while I love my name, I don’t think I’d want my child to have to constantly correct people on pronunciation or spelling or whatever.

All of this is to say that I think we’ve settled on a name that we both love, has meaning and also has a pretty cool story behind it.

One of The Nerd’s favorite books growing up was Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card. Last year, he convinced me to read it and I absolutely loved it.

The story is about a young boy (I think he’s 8 years old when the book opens?) who is a genius and is sent off to space battle school to learn how to fight an alien race, called the Buggers, who are hell-bent on destroying Earth.

The main character’s name is Andrew, but everyone calls him Ender. He is the third child in his family — an unusual occurrence when having more than two children has been outlawed by the government. They made an exception for the Wiggin family, though, because the first two children were unfit for battle school.

They hoped that Ender would have all the desirable traits in a military leader — and he did.

Personally, I LOVE the name Ender. I think it’s unique and interesting and you wouldn’t have to tell anyone how to spell it.

But The Nerd didn’t like it — he said that “Ender” was a derogatory name that was used in the book to isolate Ender and make him feel inadequate. Which is true.

So, we came to a compromise. We are going to name our little baby boy Andrew. I would love to call him Ender, but I’m not sure if we will. Right now, I think Andrew suits us just fine.

We’re still working on a middle name. There are several that I love — James and Ryan are at the top of my list. Now, if I can just get The Nerd to agree…

Ok, now for the funny story behind it.

Orson Scott Card

When I was at ALA, Orson Scott Card was signing one of his newest books, Pathfinder.

I got my book signed, and told Mr. Card that I was having a baby in December and we planned to name him Andrew, after Ender in Ender’s Game.

Mr. Card stopped signing my book for a brief moment, looked up at me, and said, “Thank you. Thank you SO MUCH for not naming him Ender. That’s a TERRIBLE name for a baby!”

I just laughed.

Easy Canvas Prints {Review & Giveaway!}

UPDATED: The Contest is now Closed.

Easy Canvas Prints-005.jpg

If you’ve read my blog for very long, you know that I often go through life with a lens in front of my face. I have hundreds of photos from the last two years, all taking up space online or on my hard drive.

But very rarely do I actually get prints made of my photos. I don’t know why. Maybe I’m just too lazy. I often wish I had more prints and I tell myself I’ll get more photos printed out.

So when Easy Canvas Prints contacted me earlier this month for a product review, I jumped at the chance.

It was SO HARD for me to choose just one photo to have printed on a canvas. Our kitchen is in serious need of decoration, so I thought one of my recipe photos would be really cool as a canvas.

I really love my Pies in a Jar photo, so it’s the one I chose. I LOVE how it turned out!

Easy Canvas Prints-001.jpg

I opted for the thicker 1.5-inch edges to the photo, since I didn’t plan on framing it. I think that makes the photo look really classic.

The color in the photo is so rich and vibrant. It reproduced beautifully on the canvas.

Easy Canvas Prints-004.jpg

The sides of the canvas are mirror images of the photo.

Easy Canvas Prints-003.jpg

Here’s the back of the canvas.

Easy Canvas Prints-002.jpg

Check out the fun logo on the back!

I am really, really pleased with this product and will definitely have more of my photos made into canvases in the future!

Vanish and Shut Out ARC {giveaway}

EDITED: The contest is now closed.

Let’s continue the epic-ness of July by giving away some more ARCs, shall we?

Don’t worry — I have lots more to give away! I’m thinking we’ll do two per week until I’m all out. How does that sound?

This week, I’ve chosen two ARCs that I, personally, can’t WAIT to read!

“To save the life of the boy she loves, Jacinda did the unthinkable: She betrayed the most closely-guarded secret of her kind. Now she must return to the protection of her pride knowing she might never see Will again—and worse, that because his mind has been shaded, Will’s memories of that fateful night and why she had to flee are gone.

Back home, Jacinda is greeted with hostility and must work to prove her loyalty for both her sake and her family’s. Among the few who will even talk to her are Cassian, the pride’s heir apparent who has always wanted her, and her sister, Tamra, who has been forever changed by a twist of fate. Jacinda knows that she should forget Will and move on—that if he managed to remember and keep his promise to find her, it would only endanger them both. Yet she clings to the hope that someday they will be together again. When the chance arrives to follow her heart, will she risk everything for love?

In bestselling author Sophie Jordan’s dramatic follow-up to Firelight, forbidden love burns brighter than ever.”

– Description from GoodReads

Release Date: Sept. 6, 2011

“Most high school sports teams have rivalries with other schools. At Hamilton High, it’s a civil war: the football team versus the soccer team. And for her part, Lissa is sick of it. Her quarterback boyfriend, Randy, is always ditching her to go pick a fight with the soccer team or to prank their locker room. And on three separate occasions Randy’s car has been egged while he and Lissa were inside, making out. She is done competing with a bunch of sweaty boys for her own boyfriend’s attention.

Lissa decides to end the rivalry once and for all: she and the other players’ girlfriends go on a hookup strike. The boys won’t get any action from them until the football and soccer teams make peace. What they don’t count on is a new sort of rivalry: an impossible girls-against-boys showdown that hinges on who will cave to their libidos first. And Lissa never sees her own sexual tension with the leader of the boys, Cash Sterling, coming.

Inspired by Aristophanes’ play Lysistrata, critically acclaimed author of The Duff (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) Kody Keplinger adds her own trademark humor in this fresh take on modern teenage romance, rivalry and sexuality.”

Some Things for the Nursery…

A few weeks ago, I posted on Twitter about how difficult it was to find Star Wars crib/toddler sheets.

You see, I’ve slowly but surely started trying to collect things for the nursery. I know that I still have five months to go, but I feel like I’m running out of time for some reason.

The biggest challenge with the nursery is that we’re converting my office into the baby’s room. That means I’ve got to get it cleaned out and emptied of yearbooks and papers and office supplies.

It’s not a fun job, and I’ve been procrastinating as much as possible.

So, while I’m procrastinating, I’ve started searching for fun things for the nursery.

I found a couple of really cute things that I wanted to share with you…

Nursery Items-002.jpg

It’s Yoda! We found this cute stuffed Yoda doll at Target, of all places. Isn’t he fun?

And the changing table and cradle in the photos? That’s from my friend, Rose, who was kind enough to give us the ones she used for her own boys.

Rose is awesome and fun and she reads Young Adult books, just like me! She and her sister run their own blog — you should totally check it out!

Nursery Items-004.jpg

But this is my favorite find — a baby blanket made from a vintage Empire Strikes Back sheet. I’m thinking of basing the whole nursery decor off of it.

I love the dark blue, light blue and white color combo.

Nursery Items-005.jpg

The fuzzy backing is so soft and will be perfect for cuddling with the little Nerdling.

I purchased the blanket through Etsy from Linda Lu Designs.

I LOVE it.

Now all I need to do is find some sheets. I’m debating on just doing plain colored sheets (the blues and white from the baby blanket) or buying regular-sized Star Wars sheets from Pottery Barn Kids and sewing them down to fit the crib.

If I do the latter, I’ll have to BUY a crib first. Which is my main dilemma.

And if I BUY a crib, I have to have a place to put it, which means I have to CLEAN OUT the nursery. And so, the vicious cycle begins.

Anyway, I’m really happy with the things I’ve found so far and am on the look-out for even more! If you see anything, leave a link in the comments, k?

Oh, and we’re looking for VINTAGE Star Wars stuff. NOT the Clone Wars cartoon. ‘Cause, you know, that’s totally LAME. :)

Happy Tuesday!
